Aurora in Alta
Alta lies at the head of a fjord in Finnmark, shielded by mountains from much of the coastal weather. It has a notably drier, more continental climate than Tromsø or Lofoten, which is why many aurora chasers pick it when they want the best odds of clear sky.
It has a special place in aurora history. In 1899 the Norwegian physicist Kristian Birkeland set up an observatory on nearby Haldde mountain to study the northern lights, work that fed into the modern understanding that the aurora is driven by charged particles from the Sun.
Alta is smaller and quieter than Tromsø, with less light pollution and a short drive to properly dark country. Expect colder nights; dress for it.
Season
September to early April. Winter cold is sharper than on the coast.
